Fed: Tourism industry challenged to get visitors out to bush
A new study says overseas tourist numbers are expected to double in the next decadebut more are choosing to see no more of Australia than the capital cities.
Transport Minister JOHN ANDERSON and Tourism Minister JOE HOCKEY say the key issueis how to get the tourists from the cities to the regions.
The comments follow a tourism industry round table and the release of discussion paperson a 10-year industry plan and proposals for boosting regional tourism.
Mr ANDERSON says most inbound tourists want to see the bush, but most of them arrivein Australia only to find it's too hard to get out there -- so they tend not to go.
Mr HOCKEY says tourism is having a profound effect on regional Australia, providingthe key industry and the bulk of jobs in towns such as Alice Springs.
But he says getting tourists there remains a major problem.
The studies have found Australia can expect visitor numbers to double to more than10 million a year by 2012.
